With its tables, queries, forms, and reports, this tool has the necessary power to turn a user’s datasets into usable information. The final tool in the suite, Base, is a database tool whose functionality is impressive. The variety of options allow users to create multiple, custom image types ranging from business flowcharts to silly graphics. Draw, a drawing, graphic-based tool, opens to a blank canvas with a multitude of toolbar options. I am not aware of a Microsoft® comparable product for formulas, making this an excellent differentiator for Libre Office. Math, a formula-creation and editing program within the suite, instantly looks like a program I wish I would have had in middle school. Once a template is chosen, intuitive editing and formatting options present themselves in various toolbars to the left, right, and above the draft. Impress, Libre Office’s presentation software, prompts the user to choose a template upon opening the program. I was able to easily add data, create formulas, format cells, and accomplish anything I would need from a spreadsheet software. The spreadsheet tool, Calc, also bears a striking resemblance to Excel, making for great ease of adoption. In Libre Office’s word processor, Writer, I found it easy to draft documents, edit, format, and utilize any functionality a user would expect in a program like this. Most buttons and toolbars are exactly where a Microsoft® user would expect to find them, making the learning curve very shallow. As soon as the program opens, users will feel instantly at home, with a copycat interface to that of Office365. A computer restart is suggested for the full installation settings to take effect however, the program will work immediately upon its download, regardless of a restart. First, the download was quite easy and fast. The logos and icons and overall user interface feel like Deja vu as you toggle back and forth between each program. Libre Office’s look and feel bears a striking resemblance to Microsoft® Office 365 suite. Libre Office may give Microsoft® Office suite a run for its money with its near-identical user interface and free download.

Because of the profound implications of information/ misinformation sharing through these platforms, the situation has come to a point wherein experts cannot weigh their opinion on such a crucial topic. More so, in a space where public expression is meant to be the key. The incident, however, highlights how the lack of accurate information around several theories is blurring the line between facts and misinformation. Twitter marking it as misinformation is hence, not a completely baseless move. Note that Luigi's tweet claimed that people vaccinated with mRNA-based vaccines shed spike proteins, an idea that has repeatedly been rejected by scientists from around the world. In the case of gene expression assay microarrays or RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), RNA spike-ins are used. With the advent of DNA microarray chips in the 1990s and the commercialization of high-throughput methods for sequencing and RNA detection assays, manufacturers of hybridization assay "kits" started to provide pre-developed spike-ins. These controls became known as "spike-ins". The spike protein in SARS-CoV-2 (SARS-2-S) interacts with the human ACE2 receptor to gain entry into a cell to initiate infection. In such assays, positive control oligonucleotides are necessary to provide a standard for comparison of target sequence concentration, and to check and correct for nonspecific binding that is, incidental binding of the RNA to non- complementary DNA sequences. Nucleic acid hybridization assays have been used for decades to detect specific sequences of DNA or RNA, with a DNA microarray precursor used as early as 1965. The degree of hybridization between the spike-ins and the control probes is used to normalize the hybridization measurements of the sample RNA. A known quantity of RNA spike-in is mixed with the experiment sample during preparation. This process of specific binding is called hybridization. Ī spike-in is designed to bind to a DNA molecule with a matching sequence, known as a control probe. RNA spike-ins are short synthetic RNA polymers.Īn RNA spike-in is an RNA transcript of known sequence and quantity used to calibrate measurements in RNA hybridization assays, such as DNA microarray experiments, RT-qPCR, and RNA-Seq. One at a time, the fictional spaceships elegantly “aileron roll” across the screen, mimicking the movements of the 1940s aircraft almost exactly. The clip was used as a model for the memorable shot of Rebel craft diving to attack the Death Star. fighters during Stateside training exercises, lifted from a jittery newsreel, showed aircraft peeling out of formation and dropping from sight. These clips of spinning Spitfires and coldly mechanical Messerschmitts were being used to communicate with the visual effects (VFX) crews working nonstop to finish the movie’s climax. The discombobulating war-film excerpts may have failed to beguile viewers at Lucas’ San Anselmo home, but that was not their primary purpose. And that sum leaves out the additional billions generated by sequels, spin-offs, and merchandise over the four decades following its initial release. To date the movie, now retitled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, has grossed more than $775 million worldwide. The climactic space battle, wherein dozens of screaming (yes, in space, but don’t worry about it) fighters shoot it out over a gigantic Imperial space station the Rebel Alliance is trying to destroy, had so many placeholder shots it was nearly impossible to follow. In fact, nearly all the special effects were unfinished. It didn’t help that the rough cut had incomplete sound effects, lacked the musical score that would eventually win an Academy Award for composer John Williams, and was slathered in grease pencil streaks to take the place of laser fire. While no one else was as acerbic as De Palma or as optimistic as Spielberg, there was a clear consensus that Star Wars needed a lot of work before its Memorial Day weekend 1977 release date. De Palma, who’d just had his first big hit with the 1975 Stephen King adaptation Carrie and would go on to make blockbusters like The Untouchables and the first Mission: Impossible, was particularly brutal, poking fun at Princess Leia’s hair and the frequent references to “The Force.” He also mocked the muffled voice of Darth Vader, whose dialogue had not yet been menacingly dubbed by James Earl Jones (to the chagrin of actor David Prowse, who played the towering villain on camera), and howled at the movie’s tedious six-paragraph opening crawl (later slimmed down, with De Palma’s help, to three). The movie was long, poorly acted, and staggeringly weird. When the lights came up, there was embarrassed silence. Likewise, participants who had COVID had significantly worse performance on a memory task. However, testing showed that performance on an attention task was not as good among the group that had COVID compared with those who did not. All participants reported having no problems with their memory or thinking. Nearly 40% of the participants had recovered from COVID that did not require hospitalization, while the rest had not had COVID. The study involved 136 participants who were recruited from a website advertising the study as a brain game to see how well people could perform. Less obvious lapses in memory and attention may occur even with mild COVIDĪ recent study published by a group of German researchers suggests that even people who don't notice signs of cognitive impairment can have problems with memory and attention after recovering from a mild case of COVID-19. These findings raise some important questions about how COVID-19 infection affects cognition. Studies report these issues both in people who were not hospitalized with COVID and in those who were, as well as in people who had severe cases. People struggling with the effects of long COVID may have noticeable problems with attention, memory, and executive function. executive function, which includes more complex skills such as planning, focusing attention, remembering instructions, and juggling multiple tasks.memory, the ability to learn, store, retain, and later retrieve information.Attention is like a spotlight on a stage during a show that allows performers to stand out from the background. attention, which allows our brains to actively process information that is happening around us while simultaneously ignoring other details.Cognitive impairment is a reduction in your ability to perform one or more thinking skills.Īmong people who were hospitalized for COVID, a wide range of problems with cognition have been reported. What is cognition?Ĭognition refers to processes in the brain that we use to think, read, learn, remember, reason, and pay attention. But we do know that this form of brain fog can affect different aspects of cognition. However, we don't really understand why brain fog happens after COVID-19, or how long these symptoms are likely to last. In many cases, brain fog is temporary and gets better on its own. Brain fog can also occur following chemotherapy or a concussion. What is brain fog?īrain fog, a term used to describe slow or sluggish thinking, can occur under many different circumstances - for example, when someone is sleep-deprived or feeling unwell, or due to side effects from medicines that cause drowsiness. Those who come to our cognitive clinic are among the estimated 22% to 32% of patients who recovered from COVID-19, yet find they still have brain fog as part of their experience of long COVID, or post-acute sequelae of SARS CoV-2 infection (PASC), as experts call it. They can't think of a specific word they want to use, and they are uncharacteristically forgetful. As a neurologist working in the COVID Survivorship Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, I find that my patients all have similar issues. |
